CARROT CULTIVATION
Approximately two-thirds of the world production of carrots is obtained in Europe and in Asia. 75% of all Italian production, amounting to around 500.000 tonnes, comes from three Regions alone: Sicily (42%), Abruzzo (21%) and Latium (12%). Other important areas for this cultivation are Veneto, Emilia-Romagna and Apulia.
The varieties are generally classified on the basis of their form and the length of the root. Among the short-rooted varieties of a spheroidal shape are Red Parisian or Paris Market, Short Red and Signal; among the medium-rooted varieties, the most renowned are Nantes, Chantenay, Amsterdam and Touchon. Finally, as regards long-rooted cultivars, the most commonly grown variety is the Fiumicino.
