APPLE CULTIVATION

An indigenous tree of East Asia, today the apple tree is intensively grown in China, the United States, Russia and Europe (above all in Italy and France).
Italian production is concentrated in the country's north, with 80% of the total harvest coming from the northern regions of the Trentino-Alto Adige (46%), Emilia-Romagna (17%) and Veneto (14%). Other areas of a certain importance are Piedmont, Lombardy and Campania.
Italian grown apples are available on the market practically all year round, with the summer varieties, such as Summer Red, Royal Gala and Ozark Gold, and the autumnals, like Golden Delicious, Stark Delicious, Imperatore, Jonathan, Fuji, Renetta del Canada, Granny Smith, Starking and Starkrimson. Among the major winter varities are the Annurca (grown mostly in Campania, which produces 90% of Italian output) and Stayman.
